Our showcase event!

Now on its fifth year, the 5th 1st Annual Headtorch Marathon takes place on the 28th December from Mickleham Village Hall.

A social Marathon, with a difference. This guided event is the ideal way to work off some of those Christmas calories we all tend to pile on over the festive period.

After the rubbish time we all had in 2020 due to the Corona virus, the loss of our chief route planner Mark & the postponement of the 4th 1st Annual Headtorchruns Marathon, we’re going to go big this year with 200 runners! This will be a joint celebration of the life of old Thorners & of it being our 5th 1st Annual Headtorchruns Marathon.

What you get.

Along with a guided run for you over some of the best trails that Surrey can offer, there will also be a disco for your family members. While we’re out running the trails, they will have the opportunity to let their hair down & enjoy themselves. The disco will start at 7.30pm & finish by 11:30pm & they can make their merry way home, unfortunately for us though, we’ll still be out on the hills. Once we’re back, we can have our post run party with plenty of mulled wine & mince pies.

Keeping the Charity spirit alive, the Disco will be a free event for your family, but there will be the usual Charity buckets out if they feel like making a donation.

Please bring along a few nibbles & drinks to share with the others in the event.

Entry is the same as previous years. Please read below.

Entry fee is £35. Each entrant will sign up via our registration process & when they run the Marathon, they will be refunded their entry fee minus the registration transaction fee of £5.

****However! If you don’t turn up on the night, your entry fee, after costs  will go directly to our charity VirginMoney giving page & you will receive nothing back.****

You will be given the opportunity on the night to donate your entry fee to the charity if you so wish.

There will be no refunds or deferments to entrants, this is a charity night & we make it clear that we want to make as much money for KCH on the evening as we can.

As before, the post race party should be a “Cracker”.

Tremayne Cowdry

Amazing night out. Totally different concept of a mass group run that’s free. No racing just a big old social run out followed by drinks and food at the village hall. This was my second run at this and it was another fantastic event. It started at 7:30 and finished about 3am with some of the best trail running in Surrey to burn off the Christmas turkey. After we got back we had the raffle, food and tea or beer if thats your thing. Think I rolled in about 7am.

Allan and Mark arranged everything and what a job they did! We even had finishers tshirts and certificates. There was a charity raffle too with great prizes. So many people donated and so much money was raised it was a joy to be part of.

Roll on the 2019 event. My name will be at the top of the list.

I ran this in December 2018 and had a great laugh. Mark Thornberry designed the course and it was a fantastic run – considering we were running through the heart of Surrey, not far from London, we barely touched any road except to cross it. Fabulous trails through woods and fields even though it was dark (although I already have plans to go back and run it in daylight). Do not be fooled, however, by this being called a marathon. This is a very hard run, just over marathon length, with over 4,000ft of elevation, which is surprisingly hard when it’s 2am in the morning!! Allan organised this social event very well, ensuring no one got left behind and no entrant got lost (you notice I stress entrant there ;)) and there were people who knew where we were going spaced out through the group.
I highly recommend this run to get rid of the Christmas excesses and kick start your New Year training plan!


I ran this in December 2018, what a bizarrely bonkers & brilliant run!

Starting at 7:30pm on a Friday night when most people are are pulling on their finest for a night on the town a group of c.40 intrepid runners donned head torches & trails shoes & headed off for a guided marathon in the Surrey Hills.

We climbed, 4,300ft of climbs (aka VERY hilly), wound our way along tiny single track trails, flew down tricky steep bike tracks, splashed through muddy puddles, clambered over styles & sprinted across fields that *may* have be home to cows & bulls in them.

10 miles in saw us at the second highest point in the South East, Leith Hill Tower, for an impromptu mulled wine aid station. At 2am we were climbing the steps to the top of Box Hill, pausing to look out over the twinkling light of the towns below.

This was an expertly conceived & designed, but incredibly tough, run. The difficulty of which should not be underestimated. It was wonderfully organised & led throughout. Running as a group, this was not a race, we chatted, laughed, shared snacks & our love of trail running. A sweeper ran at the rear to ensure no one was left behind & several of the group had the route loaded onto handheld gps devises as back-up.

Give me a hill, a muddy trail & great company over a bar, club & dance floor any Friday night. Running through pitch black forests & the silence of the night time trail with the the only sound being the hoot on a owl far outweighed the toughness of the miles, I cannot recommend this run enough, I’ll be there for the 3rd 1st Annual Headtorch Runs Marathon in 2019.

I ran this in December 2018. What’s not to like!

Enjoying the company of people you’ve spent time with on the trails at different races and meeting new runners. Getting in some post Christmas miles, climbing and mud. Exchanging nutritional tips, penguin biscuits, half a snickers and a shot of whiskey (I’ve previously being doing it all wrong).

A superbly well organised run, for a very good cause.

I’m already looking forward to my 3rd 1st Annual Headtorch Marathon.

Mandatory Kit.

  • Headtorch or light source.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Silver foil blanket.
  • Waterproof jacket.
  • 1lt bladder or bottles capable of carrying 1lt of fluids.
  • Most importantly of all, a Canary. Those of you that have run our charity events know how important this is. No Canary, no run! Canary mementos from our previous events are *NOT* acceptable.
